How to read this estimate
This estimator combines three data sources: 2025–2026 quote averages from the six largest US pet insurers (Trupanion, Healthy Paws, Embrace, Lemonade, Spot, ASPCA), state-level cost-of-care multipliers from the AVMA, and breed-specific claim frequency data published in industry actuarial reports. The result is a realistic mid-market quote — typically within ±20% of what you'll actually be quoted.
For brachycephalic breeds, insurance economics work differently than for the average dog. French Bulldogs file claims at roughly 2.3× the rate of mixed breeds, English Bulldogs even higher. The break-even point usually lands within the first 3–4 years of ownership, and a single BOAS surgery ($3,000–$7,000) can recoup years of premiums in one claim. The downside protection is the real value, not the year-to-year math.
The single most important rule: buy the policy before the first comprehensive vet exam. Once a veterinarian documents any breathing concern, allergic skin issue, or joint laxity, those conditions become pre-existing and are excluded permanently. For a Frenchie or Pug puppy, the optimal window is between 8 and 12 weeks of age, immediately after bringing them home.
